Note to self

A recipe for disaster:

  • Boast about the ease of your Dapper -> Edgy upgrade
  • Try the same procedure first thing Monday morning on your mission-critical work machine

It was sysadmin hell in our office today – I walked in and found a colleague trying to rebuild two laptops with two different OSs. I swear some days there really is “something in the air”.

I don’t want to talk about it :)

It was going great, until the upgrade hit some pcmcia packages. This used to be a problem going from Breezy -> Dapper but I thought it was fixed – or at least thought I’d got rid of the pcmcia stuff. Anyway, the whole process just hangs, with modprobe giving a load of ~ 10. Seemed to be a second hang involving nfs-kernel-server too. Tried killing a few things, to no avail and was forced to reboot – into an unusable system of course. Messed around with rescue disks for a while before deciding a clean install was the only solution.

The best I can say is that Ubuntu makes it really easy to restore software quickly and my /home is always preserved on its own partition.
