I look after an aging website called ArchaeaWeb. It’s a site well past its use-by date, but we keep it online in the hope that a few people find it useful and try to let it look after itself. A problem with this approach is that most of the site traffic comes from spambots and people trying to crack it. There are an awful lot of “web.de” and “mail.ru” domains in the list of registered users.
So I was pleased to see that someone has coded a Captcha component for Joomla, the CMS that runs the site. The download link is incorrect and the authors site loads very slowly, but the files that you need for Joomla 1.0.11 are here:
Install the component as normal, unzip the patches to the root directory of your Joomla site and provided you have the required PHP GD stuff, you should be set. Let’s see if this goes some way to cutting down fake registrations.
