ABC is reporting that not a single tsunami warning buoy was operational when a tsunami struck Java earlier this week. Twenty-two buoys were recommended after the 2004 tsunami; only two have been deployed and neither of those were working.
Only a few weeks ago, a BBC headline proclaimed ‘Asia tsunami warning system ready’. Apparently not. An awful lot of people live in this region, yet barely register on the West’s radar. You’ve probably forgotten already the May earthquake in Java that killed ~ 6000 people.
