What You’re Doing Is Rather Desperate

Notes from the life of a bioinformatics researcher

Current Research

I work in the P-Health group for CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences. Our aim is to contribute to preventative health through the analysis of large datasets using advanced statistical and bioinformatics methods.

  2. Hi,
I came from Physics background (Masters) and then did another masters in Bioinformatics and went on for my PhD in Bioinformatics in UK. I then worked in 3 companies in India but found the work not very satisfactory and so again moved back to academia into research. I always wanted to work with biologists but never got a chance. Also I find myself in a difficult situation since I dont have a biology or a computer background. I like to do work that balances out biology and computer science. I still not very comfortable with biology as the jargons are so many and find myself trying understand something new everyday! I still wonder where my future is and not sure about it. Any useful insights!?

    Thanks,
    Vidhya.

  3. Hi Vidhya,
I’m probably the last person to ask for career advice, being one of those long-term postdocs. The main thing is to find work that you find interesting and a place where you enjoy living. I would not worry too much about not having a biological background – you can always pick up what you need to know along the way. The challenge is to get the biologists to explain concepts to you in ways that you can translate to computational structures.
